Frozen Photo

Group Size: 6–20 participants Duration: 15–20 minutes Materials: Optional, sound signal (clap, whistle, music stop)

Objectives:

  • Encourage creativity and imagination
  • Develop non-verbal communication
  • Support expressive participation
  • Support body awareness and presence

Instructions: The facilitator gives a theme, situation, or word (e.g., “school,” “friendship,” “chaos,” “celebration”). Participants move freely and create a scene together using their bodies. At a sound or visual signal, everyone freezes exactly as they are, like a photograph. The group then observes the “photo” and tries to interpret what it represents. The facilitator may ask groups to create multiple frozen images with different themes.

Adaptations for Neurodiversity:

  • Allow participants to stay observers if they do not want to perform
  • Offer simple, concrete themes
  • Provide visual examples before starting
  • Allow small group participation instead of whole group
  • Reduce physical complexity if needed

Sensory and Safety Considerations: Medium sensory load due to movement and group proximity. Can be adjusted by reducing group size or movement intensity.

Facilitator Notes: Emphasize that there is no “correct” pose. The focus is on expression, not performance quality. Ensure participants feel safe and not judged.

Experiencies

Highly effective for group creativity and engagement. Works well in youth, education, and mixed-ability settings.
